Any suggestions on movies for the Bus?
June 27th, 2007 by Mike ChambersIt just hit me that some of the bus trips between cities are pretty long (20 hours from Portland to Vegas, 20+ hours from LA to Dallas), so I figured we should make sure that the bus is well stocked with some movies to wile away the hours.
Of course, I have picked up some of the standards like Spinal Tap, Monty Python’s Holy Grail, and Hackers (a very accurate portrayal of computer hacking… not!). Anyone else have any suggestions? What are the best geek / coding movies? What do we need to make sure is on the bus?
Post your suggestions in the comments…

Office Space - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0151804/
here are some ideas:
The Wizard
Strange Brew
Space Balls
Boondock Saints
The Transporter 1 & 2
Pulp Fiction
Snatch
Red Dawn
Goonies
oh and since your going to be on one… Road Trip.
Hope some of these might work for ya. See you in Pittsburgh.

you guys missed Pirates of the Silicon Valley on the list. It’s a must. Good will hunting is also a killer movie. To kill the time, get some tv series like 24, entourage, numb3rs, etc.
adding to the other standards of _Princess Bride_, Indy Jones (I and III), Seasons of _The Office_; I’ll toss some other “series”: _Arrested Development_ and _Curb Your Enthusiasm_.
One more: _10 MPH_ (http://www.10mph.com): the documentary of two guys traveling the USA on a Segway…very cool.
A Scanner Darkly - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/
Full Metal Jacket (Me love you long time)
Chappele Show Season 2 (I’m Rick James)
Species (Natasha Henstridge…need I say more?)
The Net (Pretorians are so clever…)
Airplane (don’t call me Sherly)
Jumpin Jack Flash (Sperry Repair Man)
War Games (OMG that is so 80’s)
Tron (even more 80’s than Atari 2600)
D.A.R.Y.L (that darn turtle)
How about Firefly and Serenity? Also, I highly recommend Pan’s Labyrinth.
Logan’s Run
Sci-Fi Mini-series: The Lost Room,
Rad (80s bike movie);
Gleaming the Cube (80 skate movie);
No one said Ghostbusters or Back to the Futures;
12 Monkeys;
Thats all for right now.
Rome
Kill Bill (whole thing)
Aliens
Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle
Matrix
Final Fantasy
Casshern. Live-action anime. Bam! Doens’t get much better than that for geeks!
Amazon
Doh!
One you can actually buy!
Boondock Saints is always a good movie.
You could get the full dvd version of Band of Brothers, it’s ~10 hours long and it’s great to be able to watch them all back to back hehe
Come to the uk :) To Brighton / Lewes :) Do IT
Oh Little Shop of Horrors. The one w/ Honey I shrunk the kids guy.
Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood … for all of us cool chicks out here who’re actively tracking the tour!
“Species (Natasha Henstridge…need I say more?)”
… yeah, because you want a bunch of horny guys stuck on a bus for 20+ hours :)
Hey Mike, trying this one more time….for some reason its not taking my comments…
Ok, so forgive the obvious and silly, but you gotta have “Speed” on the bus - you could even re-enact some of the scenes with the AIR bus!
In addition to a couple faves that other mentioned already:
12 Monkeys, Strange Brew, Logans Run and Casshern (very cool indeed)
Another good geek movie is:
Sneakers
Also, if you can find a copy of it on AmazonUK, the BBC series “The IT Crowd” is especially apropos and definitely funny.
Here are some other favorites from my list of classics (had IMDB links for all of them, but the comment system thinks its spam with all the links)
Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension
Reuben and Ed
Brazil
Testsuo (Iron Man)
Naked Lunch
eXistenZ
Cabin Boy
Dead Men Dont Wear Plaid
The man with Two Brains
UHF
Forbidden Planet
Brainstorm
Bubba Ho-Tep
Repo Man
Blade Runner
The Big Lebowski
Barton Fink
Eraserhead
Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo
Army of Darkness
THX 1138
Donnie Darko
Thats what I would stock up with. :)
The first geek comedy: “Desk Set,” starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Tracy plays the geek. The computer is huge!
It’s the only geek flick/chick flick. A rare combination.
I agree with the first poster, Office Space is a must and so is Idiocracy! If you haven’t watched it yet then you’re in for a treat.
[...] now that everyone has helped me stock the Bus’s DVD library, its time to get some music for the bus. So, what do you think is the best music to code by? Im not [...]
I’ll second “Red Dawn” and “24″. If you can lay your hands on “The Cube” that’s a good sci-fi one. Jackie Chan’s “Who Am I” is entertaining. Classics like “The Omega Man” and “Soylent Green” or even the original “Planet of Apes” are worthwhile. “The Band of Brothers” could kill a lot of the road weariness. And throw in a couple of zombie movies - they always satisfy the hunger. :-)
Sounds like you guys need MyMovieMatch, built on the Adobe Integrated Runtime Beta :)
Here’s the blurb on the AIR Showcase page: http://labs.adobe.com/showcase/air/
It works - Just go through the FLASH-based “key forge” and rate 5-10 movies once you pull down the app.
