Best Music to Code by?

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007 by Mike Chambers

OK, now that everyone has helped me stock the Bus’s DVD library, its time to get some music for the bus. So, what do you think is the best music to code by? Im not asking for your favorite music, but rather what do you put in the player, when you have 12 hours of non-stop coding in front of you?

While my coding music tastes change over time (lots of Interpol, The Killers, Bloc Party, and The Roots lately), there are some things that are consistently there for me when I have to pull an all-nighter. This includes lots of downbeat stuff like Kruder and Dorfmeister, as well as Thievery Corporation (although that has gotten a little over-played), old R.E.M., Stereolab, and if im in the mood for something new, then Ill tune in San Francisco’s own SomaFM. My all time top coding album though is probably Radiohead’s OK Computer.

So, what do you think is the best coding music? Does it depend on what you are coding? or coding with? What are the essentials that I need to make sure are on the bus? Post in the comments (or on your blog, and ping back to here).

Any suggestions on movies for the Bus?

It just hit me that some of the bus trips between cities are pretty long (20 hours from Portland to Vegas, 20+ hours from LA to Dallas), so I figured we should make sure that the bus is well stocked with some movies to wile away the hours.

Of course, I have picked up some of the standards like Spinal Tap, Monty Python’s Holy Grail, and Hackers (a very accurate portrayal of computer hacking… not!). Anyone else have any suggestions? What are the best geek / coding movies? What do we need to make sure is on the bus?
